Why Boring Things Can Feel Almost Physically Painful with ADHD

You have a form to fill out. It isn’t difficult, and it probably won’t take more than fifteen minutes, but somehow you have spent most of the morning avoiding it. You have checked your email, refilled your coffee, looked something up that suddenly seemed important, straightened a few things on your desk, checked the news, returned to the form, read the first question again, and discovered that almost every cell in your body seems to be pleading with you to do something—anything—other than this.

From the outside, this can be difficult to understand. The task isn’t frightening, complicated, or particularly demanding, so why not simply get it over with? If you have ADHD, however, you may know exactly what this experience feels like, because boredom can sometimes seem less like the absence of entertainment and more like an intensely uncomfortable internal state. You may become restless or irritable, time seems to slow down, your attention repeatedly escapes toward something more interesting, and continuing the task can begin to feel almost physically painful.

That description isn’t merely rhetorical. Researchers are paying increasing attention to the relationship between ADHD and boredom, and a large 2026 review and meta-analysis found a substantial association between ADHD and boredom across studies involving more than 22,000 people. Scientists aren’t saying that boredom literally activates the body exactly like physical injury, but they are increasingly recognizing that, for some people with ADHD, under-stimulation can produce a profoundly aversive cognitive and emotional state.

Boredom Is Not Nothing

We tend to think of boredom as what happens when nothing is happening, but your brain experiences it much more actively than that. Boredom is a signal that you want to be engaged but are having difficulty finding sufficient meaning, stimulation, challenge, or reward in what you are doing. It can involve restlessness, frustration, mind-wandering, dissatisfaction and the peculiar sensation that time itself has slowed down.

This matters enormously in ADHD because the brain systems involved in attention and motivation don’t operate independently. To remain engaged with something, your brain must determine that the activity deserves attention, maintain an appropriate level of arousal, inhibit competing attractions, anticipate some form of reward or meaningful outcome, and keep the goal sufficiently active to continue working toward it.

When the activity is inherently interesting, novel, challenging, emotionally engaging or immediately rewarding, many of those conditions are supplied by the task itself. This helps explain the familiar ADHD paradox in which someone who struggles for twenty minutes to complete routine paperwork can spend three uninterrupted hours designing something, researching a fascinating subject, repairing a computer, playing music, gardening, writing, or solving a difficult problem.

The difference isn’t necessarily the amount of effort required. Sometimes the more difficult activity is dramatically easier to sustain because it provides the brain with something the boring task does not: sufficient stimulation.

What Is Happening Inside the ADHD Brain?

Dopamine is part of this story, although the popular explanation that ADHD simply means “not enough dopamine” is much too simplistic. Dopamine participates in brain systems involved in motivation, reward anticipation, reinforcement learning and determining what is worth pursuing, while norepinephrine contributes importantly to alertness, attention and executive control. ADHD involves differences in the regulation and functioning of these systems and the neural networks they influence.

This can make motivation particularly sensitive to the characteristics of the task. An activity offering novelty, urgency, challenge, personal interest or an immediate reward can generate enough salience to capture and sustain attention, whereas an activity whose reward is distant, predictable or abstract may struggle to compete.

Consider doing your taxes. The eventual reward is important—you meet a legal obligation, avoid penalties and perhaps receive a refund—but most of that reward lies somewhere in the future. Right now, you are looking at numbers, forms and instructions. Your phone, meanwhile, can provide something novel, interesting or socially rewarding within seconds.

Your brain isn’t conducting a philosophical evaluation of which activity matters more. Neural systems involved in motivation are responding to the rewards and stimulation available in the present moment.

The Problem May Also Be Arousal

Reward processing is only part of the picture. Researchers have also proposed that ADHD can involve difficulties regulating arousal, leaving some people especially vulnerable when an environment provides too little stimulation.

Imagine trying to drive a car whose engine repeatedly drops below the speed necessary to run smoothly. You might instinctively press the accelerator just to keep the engine engaged. Something similar may happen behaviorally when a person with ADHD begins fidgeting, switching tasks, checking a phone, starting a conversation, seeking novelty or creating urgency while doing something monotonous.

What looks like distraction can sometimes be an attempt to increase stimulation.

This may also help explain why waiting can be so uncomfortable. Standing in a slow line, sitting through a repetitive meeting or listening to someone explain something you already understand provides neither meaningful action nor much opportunity to change the situation. Restlessness builds, attention wanders, and the urge to escape becomes increasingly powerful.

The default mode network may contribute as well. This network becomes active when attention turns away from an external task toward internally generated thoughts, memories, daydreams and associations. Effective concentration involves coordination between networks supporting goal-directed attention and the default mode network, and research suggests that this regulation can differ in ADHD. When an external task supplies too little stimulation, internally generated thoughts may become formidable competitors for attention.

Suddenly you aren’t reading paragraph three of the insurance document anymore. You’re mentally redesigning your kitchen.

Why “Just Get It Done” Often Fails

This is where ordinary advice about motivation can become counterproductive. If the problem were simply that you hadn’t decided the task was important enough, reminding yourself of its importance should solve it.

Usually, you already know it is important. You know the report is due. You know the laundry needs folding. You know the expense form has to be submitted. You know you should make the appointment. In fact, awareness of the unfinished task may have been nagging at you for days. Knowing matters, but knowing does not automatically create stimulation, reward or activation.

When you repeatedly encounter this problem, another layer can develop. You remember previous experiences of struggling through similar tasks and begin anticipating the discomfort before you even start. Now the boring task carries not only insufficient stimulation but frustration, guilt and the expectation of another unpleasant battle with yourself.

Avoidance temporarily relieves that discomfort, which makes avoidance itself rewarding. The cycle becomes remarkably effective at perpetuating itself.

Don’t Wait for the Task to Become Interesting

Fortunately, understanding the mechanism suggests a different strategy. Instead of repeatedly demanding that your brain become interested in something it finds unrewarding, change the conditions under which you do it.

Start by making the task smaller. “Do the bookkeeping” may feel like an endless, featureless block of boredom, while “enter five receipts” has a visible endpoint. Once those five are entered, you can choose another five. Short work intervals can accomplish something similar because they transform an indefinite period of monotony into a finite challenge: I’m doing this for twelve minutes.

Then deliberately add stimulation. Play instrumental music while doing paperwork, walk while making routine phone calls, fold laundry while listening to a favorite podcast, change locations, stand rather than sit, or use a timer and challenge yourself to finish a defined portion before it rings. The stimulation should support the task rather than replace it, but there is no prize for making boring work unnecessarily boring.

Immediate rewards can help as well. The eventual satisfaction of having completed a quarterly report may be too distant to motivate you at 10:15 this morning, so create something closer. Finish this section, then get coffee. Complete twenty minutes of administrative work, then take a walk. Check off visible steps as you complete them so progress itself becomes rewarding.

Borrow Some Stimulation From Other People

Other people can also change the motivational environment dramatically. This helps explain why body doubling—working in the presence of another person—can be surprisingly effective for some people with ADHD. The other person doesn’t have to help with the task. Their presence may simply provide additional stimulation, structure and accountability.

Executive function coaching takes that external support further. A coach can help you identify which tasks consistently produce disengagement, determine where initiation or persistence breaks down, break amorphous responsibilities into manageable actions, establish external deadlines and accountability, and experiment with ways of making low-stimulation work easier to enter and sustain.

Importantly, executive function coaching isn’t about having someone repeatedly tell you to try harder. Most adults with ADHD have already spent years telling themselves that. The more useful question is, What conditions allow this particular brain to engage?

Perhaps you work better with another person present. Perhaps you need a visible countdown. Maybe fifteen-minute bursts work better than hour-long work periods, or difficult administrative tasks need to happen in the morning rather than late afternoon. Perhaps you need an immediate reward, background stimulation, a clearer first step or an externally agreed-upon deadline.

The objective is to discover the conditions under which your brain can reliably act, and then create those conditions intentionally.

You Don’t Have to Make Boredom Disappear

There is an important distinction here. Building an ADHD-friendly life doesn’t mean arranging things so that you never have to tolerate boredom. That isn’t realistic, and some capacity to remain with an unstimulating activity is useful.

The goal is to recognize that boredom itself can create a genuine obstacle to engagement and then develop ways to reduce that obstacle rather than turning it into a judgment about your character.

You may always find filling out insurance forms painfully dull. Folding laundry may never become fascinating. Waiting on hold probably won’t become a treasured opportunity for personal growth. The difference is that once you understand what your brain is struggling with, you can stop waiting for motivation to mysteriously appear and begin supplying some of the stimulation, structure, immediacy and accountability that the task itself fails to provide.

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you don’t care enough about what needs to be done. Sometimes your brain simply needs a better reason to stay in the room.
