Have a safe 4th! #ADHD

Tomorrow’s the Fourth! What do you have planned?

  • A picnic by the shore?
  • Fireworks down by the river?
  • A baseball game followed by apple pie?
  • Beer pong with new friends?

There are a ton of traditions surrounding the fourth that don’t have anything to do with celebrating America’s freedom. Temptation can be high to take more risks, drink more beer, or show off a stupid stunt.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics reveal the 4th of July is the deadliest day for teenage drivers.

You probably already know that impulse control is a challenge for many people with ADHD. When you combine that with ample opportunities to party on the 4th, it’s no wonder that more teen drivers are killed on the 4th of July than on any other day of the year.

You have a better chance of playing safe on the 4th if you plan ahead. Before you take that first drink, ask yourself:

How am I getting home? Do I have a friend who has agreed to be the designated driver? If you don’t, then you need to make a plan now!

How will I know when to stop? How many beers are too many? Did you know the body can safely process one drink an hour? Funny thing about alcohol, when you are buzzed, you lose perspective of how it’s affecting you.

Buzzed driving is drunk driving.

And don’t even think about mixing marijuana with alcohol…or driving!

Enough of the lecture. You’ve probably heard it before from mom or dad.  Even adults need reminders to stay safe. Don’t become a statistic.  Stay safe!

What are some other impulses you might want to think through before you do?

  • Roman candle fight in the park?
  • Unprotected sex by the light of the moon?
  • ???

Have a great holiday!
