What is an ADHD coach?

We frequently get asked the question, “what is ADHD coaching?”  We understand it is a new concept that takes time to understand, so here’s another way to look at it.  We hope it helps.

Simply put, a coach helps you get where you want to go in life.

  • An ADHD coach works collaboratively with you to help you attain your goals.
  • Your coach starts with the assumption that you are capable and resourceful.  He or she believes in you!
  • While school may be the # 1 reason you come to a coach, your coach will start with a whole person approach. This means she will help you identify your strengths, assess your weaknesses, figure out what you are passionate about and what you want more of in your life.
  • Your coach will also help you figure out how to get the things done that you aren’t passionate about but have to do to keep your life on track (think bill paying, housecleaning, homework, whatever turns you off).
  • You coach helps you figure out how you are getting in your own way and develop a plan to get results.

ADHD coaches work with you to help you identify ways to improve your focus, clarify what steps you need to take, break down insurmountable obstacles, and work with you to develop and commit to an action plan.

A coach holds you accountable for things you WANT to do.

What can you expect to get from working with an ADHD coach?

  • You’ll gain new insight about yourself
  • You’ll gain new skills, more choices and new strategies for working through problems
  • You’ll most likely be less stressed and far more productive.
  • Research has shown that students who use the Edge coaching model have significant improvement in cognitive activities, emotional responses and overt behaviors.
  • Students who receive coaching are able to formulate goals more realistically and consistently work toward achieving them,  time more effectively, and stick with tasks even when they found them challenging.

An ADHD coach is NOT:

  • A therapist
  • A tutor
  • A life coach (life coaches aren’t trained in the unique challenges and opportunities faced by ADHD students.)
