Thomas E. Brown, M.D.

Thomas E. Brown is a clinical psychologist who is Director of the Brown Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders in Hamden, CT. He specializes in the assessment and treatment of high-IQ children, adolescents and adults with ADD/ADHD and related problems. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University, and served as the Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale University School of Medicine, as well as  Associate Director of the Yale Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders. He is currently  Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Keck School of Medicine of USC, Los Angeles, CA. He will be relocating his clinic to Los Angeles in May, 2017.

His research interests include:

  • assessment and treatment of ADD, especially in persons with high IQ
  • executive function and memory impairments in ADD
  • overlap of ADD and learning disorders
  • use of combined medications for ADD comorbidities
  • problems of sleep and awakening in ADD

He is the author several books, including:  Smart but Stuck:  Emotions in Teens and Adults with ADHD (Jossey-Bass 2014), A New Understanding of ADHD in Children and Adults:  Executive Functioning Impairments (Routledge 2013) and Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults (Yale 2005).

He is a sought after speaker at medical and psychiatric conferences, and has given lectures, workshops or grand rounds at hospitals, medical schools, colleges and universities, independent schools, public school systems, and at advocacy, business and professional groups throughout the U.S. and abroad.

He has served on the boards of both the National Attention Deficit Disorder Association and CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) and currently is Consulting Psychologist for Understood.org.
