College scholarships for ADHD students

Did you know there are scholarships for students who have ADHD?

Wait, ADHD scholarships? You heard right. Last month, Keath Low at add.about.com outlined a great list of scholarships for students with ADHD or learning disabilities.  You can see the whole list here — http://add.about.com/od/adhdresources/a/Scholarships.htm — or check them out for yourself:

Let the searcher beware

Searching for scholarships can feel like an overwhelming task.  There are plenty of sites out there promising to make it easier for you.  But beware, the FTC cautions students that there are some tell-tale signs to watch out for to tell if an organization is legit.  If you see any of these promises, run the other way, FAST!:

  • “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.”
  • “You can’t get this information anywhere else.”
  • “I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship.”
  • “We’ll do all the work.”
  • “The scholarship will cost some money.”
  • “You’ve been selected by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship” or “You’re a finalist” in a contest you never entered.

Are you just getting started looking for scholarships?

You can find some great publications that overview how to seek scholarships from the US Department of Education:  http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/index.html

I have ADHD and I’m a senior in high school. I was diagnosed when I was in the second grade. It has been very challenging for me. I have scored very well on the ACT and SAT but my GPA is considered on the lower side.

Thanks for stopping by, Gunnar. It’s not unusual for students with ADHD to do well on tests without their grades reflecting that. The biggest issue is often completing assignments. We hope you’ll consider applying for the Shire ADHD scholarship. It comes with a year of ADHD coaching that can help you get on track and learn the skills you need to reach your goals.

I have been diagnosed with a learning disability/ADHD. My grade point was high for high school with a GPA of 3.93, but my ACT and SAT test scores were low. For my freshmen yerar at college I did not receive any financial help. During my first semester at college I had a grade point of 3.5., I would love to have some help so I will not have a huge bill at the end. I would like to apply for as many scholarship or grants to help with my college expense.

The original scholarships were for first year students only. However, now anyone in a post-secondary program may apply. Good luck!
