Mindfulness Meditation – A Treatment for ADHD

Recent research studies have begun to show the usefulness of mindfulness meditation in treating the symptoms of ADHD, especially in adults. It appears to be effective because it focuses on promoting the regulation of attention. Prior studies also suggest that mindfulness training can reduce stress, improve mood and enhance aspects of executive functioning and may contribute to better emotion regulation, areas where many adults with ADHD struggle.

Tips for Using Meditation When You Have ADHD

Below are some tips recommended by ADHD coach Jacqueline Sinfield to help you with your meditation.

  • Adjust the meditation experience so that it works best for you.
  • Don’t worry if your mind keeps on chattering when you meditate. It is not a sign of failure. With practice, this should diminish.
  • Meditation doesn’t have to take a long time. If you are pressed for time or not able to do a lengthy meditation, you can do a ‘power meditation’ for 5 minutes and realize benefits.
  • Meditation is not a type of religious ritual. You can practice meditation no matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs
