Support for Mothers of ADHD Kids: Summer Retreat and Care Package

Mothers of children with ADHD are often stressed-out, overwhelmed, overworked, tired and under-nurtured for good reason. The National Institute of Mental Health identifies a host of disorders that can accompany ADHD including ASD, learning disabilities, oppositional defiant disorder, anxiety, substance abuse and other brain-based disabilities.

This summer two organizations The Edge Foundation and {a mom’s view of ADHD} are offering much-needed support to parents of children with ADHD and other brain-based disabilities: a free ADHD Parent Care Package and the Happy Mama Conference and Retreat.

The ADHD Parent Care Package offers parents of teens and college students with ADHD ideas, facts, resources and encouragement. The Care Package was written to help worried parents navigate the difficult teen years when their child has ADHD. The free publication explores a wide array of information including:

  • Life saving tips to mitigate the risks of ADHD teens
  • Steps parents can take to help their child become a better advocate for himself
  • A explanation of executive functioning and how it impacts a child’s ability to learn
  • Scientifically-based facts about how ADHD impacts a child’s brain and his ability to learn in school
  • Legal protections in the academic setting and important changes in children’s legal status when they turn age 18

The Happy Mama Conference and Retreat is a weekend away for moms of children with special needs, created by moms of children with special needs. It’s an educational conference, spa weekend, and opportunity to connect with other moms all rolled into one. Penny William, co-founder says, “Parenting children with invisible disabilities is an extremely stressful, isolating, and emotional job and one which can impact your health and well-being in a negative way. The conference is an opportunity for moms to build community and share common questions, concerns, worries, and fears. The education portion of the conference will teach skills to help moms advocate for her child and herself.  But most importantly, we want our fellow moms to be happy so participants should count on a beautiful setting, great food and plenty of fun!”

The summer, 2012 inaugural Happy Mama Conference and Retreat will be held at the Rock Barn Club and Spa in Conover, North Carolina, on July 28 and 29, 2012. It is hosted by DRT Press, the website {a mom’s view of ADHD} and sponsored by CHADD and the Catawba Valley Medical Center. One lucky mom will win a free conference registration. Visit One Lucky Mama to enter. Winner will be chosen at random on June 22.

THE HAPPY MAMA CONFERENCE AND RETREAT was co-created by Adrienne Ehlert Bashista, co-editor of and contributor to Easy to Love but Hard to Raise: Real Parents, Challenging Kids, True Stories and founder of the Easy to Love blog; Amy Coffey who has extensive experience as an advocate for IEP and 504 meetings and is passionate about helping other families who have children with invisible illnesses; and Penny Williams, creator and editor of the website {a mom’s view of ADHD}, freelance writer and real estate broker in Asheville, N.C.
